Michigan: Overrated and Overhyped

Well, I was kidding when I tweeted that I was going to write a reaction to last night’s Michigan game. I wasn’t going to write about it because I wasn’t surprised by the outcome. But then someone who writes once per fiscal quarter chimed in, so here we are…

Michigan kinda stinks. It’s hilarious and pathetic at the same time.

And I’m not just talking about the basketball team. Michigan athletics, in general, is comical.

Can’t win the big game. The football team is 0-8 in their last eight against Ohio State. They lost their only top 10 game of the season this year to bully brother Michigan State. Holy sheep shit, 3-11 in their last 14 bowl games, including a loss to Kansas State in the world renown Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

But, Michigan fans will hem and haw and say jokingly that they are a basketball school. Really? Can’t win the big game in that sport either. Smoked by Duke in the 1992 title game. Chris Webber timeout in the 1993 title game. Knocked off by Louisville with six NBA players on the roster. Couldn’t stop Luke Hancock. Got their doors blown off by Villanova. Couldn’t stop Donte DiVincenzo.

And now they lose to unranked Seton Hall last night. I mean, this wasn’t even a big game. Seton Hall was picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the Big East. I’ve been on record saying that Kevin Willard is the worst coach in the conference. They lost Sandro Mamukelashvili to the NBA Draft when he had the opportunity to come back for another season.

Seton Hall stinks. And they beat Michigan. Myles Cale is SHU’s best player, but that wasn’t who beat Michigan. Tray Jackson beat Michigan. Wait, Anders you mean to tell me a bench player from a middle-of-the-road Big East team bullied Michigan’s all-everything front court on the way to a win?

Yes, correct. Anytime Hunter Dickinson plays against a decent front court he crumbles. And are we still sure that Eli Brooks is good? And is Juwan Howard really a good coach or did he just play a couple of seasons with Lebron? Hiring him was cute. He was the third-best player on two runner-up teams in the ’90s, both of which have since been vacated. Good recruiter, maybe. Good coach, maybe not.

You can call Michigan fraudulent. You can call Michigan a joke. I’ll do both. They’ll have a decent season. They’ll be within a game or two of the Big Ten championship and probably choke it away. Then in the tournament they’ll probably lose between the round of 32 and the Elite Eight.

And that’s just who Michigan is.

PS. Ohio State 52, Michigan 10

PSS. Michigan baseball couldn’t win the big game either. They were up 1-0 in the best of three games against Vanderbilt in the CWS and blew it. Sad.
